Be careful Joe.  As a health care practicioner I am VERY leery......A good PT who can do manipulation is MUCH better......A chiropractor generally has vintage 1900 x-ray technology....doesn the x-rays standing......and uses quick jerky motions on the spine which takes all of 10 mn.  A PT trained in osteopathic manipulation will evaluate the spine vertebrae by vertebrae....use CAT scan and MRI technology vintage 2000 or more and will spend a good 45 min. aligning the spine.....furthermore, if you have had any kind of chronic muscle spasming, fast jerky motions will only make those worse (injuries such as whiplash).   That's my 2 cents and my own opinion, but please be very wise before you put yourself through this.  I have had a wonderful chiropractor I grew up with who was careful and knowlegable.  I also had visited 2 when my back first got injured and they were quick, abrupt, and very hoakey......

I have been to a few with my back problems.  The first I went to was horrible, I was in more pain when I was done than when I started.  The second was AWESOME!  I wish I still lived nearby.  He used a little gadget called an activator which aligns each vertebrae individually and you hardly notice the movement, all you do is lie there and they go up and down your back, I believe he also used it on my shoulders, hips and knees.  My legs were two different lengths when he started, finally got them the same length again!  I have one that I go to now who is your reg old chiropractor with the regular twist you around and crack ya methods.  I still like going, I feel straight when I come out and not all crooked like when I went in.  I'm not super thrilled about having my neck cracked, but it feels soooo good once its done.  then again, about an hour later I end up cracking my neck and back back into their formerly crooked positions.

i LOVE my current chiropractor. he is about 6'4 and gentle as a lamb and very softspoken and talks with you letting you know why he will be doing what he is doing and what he hopes to accomplish. i've been to hokey ones that hurt. he is not jerky and rough...he is smooth and very relaxing. he also uses technology of certain machines, not sure what they're called but they measure muscle tension and what not. i always thought the goal of the profession was to tweak bones back into place where as he taught me that is a method, that the goal is to free up nerve endings that may be blocked by poor alignment. the neck tweak always bothers me. he'll turn your neck to the side and crack it...sounds weird.  he'll probbaly have you turn on your side which is where he'll crack your lower back/hips and he'll move up  or down your spine feeling for out of place vertebrae. a bad chiropractor can do some real damage and can hurt but a good one is awesome. try to relax when you're in there and let us know how you like it

A true chiropractor AND a PT.....Joe, that's gold!!!!   How long did she spend with you???  HOw didi your muscles react??  Did she tell you to take an Epsom salt bath to reduce the chance of muscle spasem??  How coarse were her adjustments??  Was she cute??? Grin(had to ask, only YOU would get a female chiropractor  Grin)

appt took about 40 minutes. muscles reacted fine.Nothing about an epsom salt bath for spasms. Adjustments weren't too coase but I have nothng to judge against. Going back after work cuz she wanted to see how I reacted to the first treatment. 2 more scheduled next week. because of the scoliosis my right hip is lower than my left. This probably explains a lot of the hip and lower back pain I simetimes get. And yes she is kinda cute and maybe about 40. Smiley
I asked people at work that live in my neck of the woods for a referral and shes what was in my area and in my health plan.

So true!!!  I went to a chiropractic after a snowmobiling accident.  He took Xrays as I was standing, from all angles, and my spine was off alignment.  He did all these quick movements like that, they almost hurt.  And honestly, my back pain has worsened.  He had said it will worsen before it gets better.  I have a habit of "cracking" my back (twisting it) and my neck, to relieve pain.  And I have needed to do this MORE not less since going.  It really hasn't helped me at all, worsened if anything.

I can honestly say that I'm feeling much better. I can do stairs without as many aches. I played golf on Sunday and I carried my golf bag for all 5-6 miles up hill and down. I wouldn't have tried that last year. I have a better range of motion  with my shoulders and can alost get my shoulder blades to touch. Something is working.

how's it going after a few visits Joe?  Hey Joe, my mind is working overtime.  In our state a pt. needs a physician order to acquire PT.  Your chiropractor is also a PT....how does she get an order for PT when she works on you or is a chiropractor able to give an order for PT, so she can write an order for herself??? Can't help it, it's the nurse in me Roll Eyes
