I still have a ways to go (if ever) before I get to Speedo ready. But my gut is pretty well gone.

The difference is... if you are from the midwest you call it a hotdish... if you are from anywhere else, you call it a casserole! LOL
It's a bunch of food, put together, usually a protein, starch, and sometimes vegetable, held together with a sauce (most often cream of mushroom soup, sometimes tomato based though)
Midwesterners go crazy over their hotdishes...
I am originally from California and even though I moved here when I was in high school, I still am not crazy about them and generally refuse to eat them. Every time I have them on the menu here at work, I go buy my lunch! I just can't bring myself to eat them.

Sheesh Joe... tell me how you really feel!  Grin
No, I'll eat a pot pie every now and then.... I grew up po' folk... so that's what we had to eat!
Part of the hating casseroles comes from my Mom throwing anything and everything together and calling it a casserole... once we moved out here and she discovered what they were. That gave her permission to do it! Pasties I had once when I worked with a bunch of chefs and they made them. It was good, not my favorite... but decent eating.

I do believe that casseroles came form those that didn't have too much money. Ya had to make the food STREEEETCH.
Ham for Easter. Ham and potato casserole or Ham and mac and cheese the rest of the week.
This is from a guy whose Grandpa shot any bird that flew into his mulberry tree and then cooked it in tomato sauce and thats what we ate. Road kill made it in there once in a while also  Tongue

Also I'm born and raised here and we never called them a hotdish
